SDGs Coding with Python

Coding for a Sustainable Future

Empowering children and youth to code solutions aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Digital Literacy Training for Kids on Python Programming for SDGs

October - November 2023 | Spur Afrika | OpenWise Learning Foundation | GONLINE AFRICA

In a groundbreaking initiative, Spur Afrika, in partnership with OpenWise Learning Foundation and GONLINE AFRICA, successfully bridged the realms of Python programming and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), equipping young minds aged 10–15 with the tools to address real-world challenges in their communities.

The training aimed to empower participants with foundational Python coding skills while inspiring them to use technology as a catalyst for positive social impact. Through hands-on exercises and interactive sessions, children learned how programming can directly contribute to solving pressing global issues.

Program Objectives

  • Introduce basic Python programming concepts to children while cultivating awareness and understanding of SDGs
  • Demonstrate how Python skills can be applied to address local community challenges
  • Inspire participants to think creatively about how programming can contribute to solving community problems

Key Highlights

  • Practical Coding Skills: Participants mastered Python fundamentals through fun, age-appropriate exercises and mini-projects
  • SDGs Integration: The curriculum seamlessly connected coding lessons with real-world Sustainable Development Goals
  • Problem-Solving Mindset: Children were encouraged to identify local issues and develop creative coding solutions
  • Community Impact: Participants gained a sense of agency in using technology for positive change

The program successfully demonstrated how technology, specifically Python programming, can be a powerful tool for addressing global challenges while building confidence and creativity in young learners.
